This weekend has a Broadway blockbuster in its final days, a world-class wine festival a 90-minute drive into the Eastern Townships, and a few solid evenings right here in the city. It’s a good one to use.

🦁 Disney’s The Lion King: Last Weekend on Stage (Through Sept 6)

The Broadway production of The Lion King has been running at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier since August 19, and Labour Day weekend is genuinely your last chance: the run closes September 6. The staging is famously elaborate, with Julie Taymor’s costumes and puppet designs doing things that are hard to believe until you see them. The circle-of-life setup and iconic Elton John score mean you walk in knowing the songs and walk out having seen them performed in a completely different register. Tickets range from around $59 to $264; good mid-range seats are still available for most performances this weekend, but move quickly.

🍷 Fête des Vendanges, Magog: Wine Country Weekend Escape (Sept 5–13)

For a long weekend that goes somewhere, the Fête des Vendanges in Magog-Orford is one of the better getaways within reach of Montreal. On the shores of Lake Memphremagog in the Eastern Townships, over 80 exhibitors from Quebec’s wineries, microbreweries, distilleries and artisan food producers set up for nine days of tastings, live music, and lakeside atmosphere. The Saturday and Sunday of Labour Day weekend (Sept 6-7) are the heart of it. Magog is about 90 minutes from downtown Montreal via Hwy 10 and 55, which means a comfortable day trip or, better, an overnight if you can swing it. The Eastern Townships wine circuit around Dunham and Brome-Missisquoi is worth extending the trip for if you go.

🎧 Piknic Électronik: Misstress Barbara Closes Out Summer (Sept 6)

Piknic keeps rolling into September, and the Labour Day Saturday edition is a strong one. Misstress Barbara, the Montreal DJ and producer who has been a mainstay of the city’s electronic scene for decades, headlined the lineup for September 6. Parc Jean-Drapeau in early September still hits like summer: green grass, food trucks, the river behind you, and the Montréal skyline across the water. Tickets around $25. Under 18s get in free. No agenda required; just show up and let the afternoon stretch.

🕺 FOOTLOOSE Vol. 3: An 80s Dance Party on Labour Day Saturday (Sept 6)

If you’d rather be inside dancing than outside watching DJs, FOOTLOOSE Vol. 3 is the 80s party happening Labour Day Saturday in Montreal. Think shoulder pads, synth pop, and a floor that doesn’t care how old you are. It’s the kind of event that’s easier to enjoy than to explain, and a good call for the weekend if Piknic is not your format.

🌅 Sunset Cruise on the St. Lawrence (Ongoing Through September)

For something that requires zero planning once booked: the St. Lawrence River dinner and sunset cruises run through September and are consistently the best version of “romantic without trying too hard.” AML Croisières operates regular departures from the Old Port, and the 2-hour sunset cruise with dinner on board gives you the city skyline, the islands, and the Pont Jacques-Cartier lit up as you drift back in.
