Just For Laughs just opened, Nuits d’Afrique is in its final week, and the concert calendar is absolutely stacked. Montreal this week is one of those rare patches where the hardest part of planning a date night is narrowing it down. Here is the shortlist.

🌍 Nuits d’Afrique: Free Outdoor Concerts, July 14 to 19

The 40th edition of Festival International Nuits d’Afrique wraps up this week, and the outdoor programming on the Parterre du Quartier des Spectacles is free, nightly and genuinely excellent. The Femmes du Monde series puts some of the world’s most compelling women in music front and centre: Suraras do Tapajós, Brazil’s first all-female carimbó collective, kick things off Tuesday; Somali singer Sahra Halgan takes the stage Wednesday; Somos Más and Taafé Fanga follow Thursday and Friday; Congolese soul singer Joyce N’Sana brings the heat Saturday; and Cape Verdean dance artist Elida Almeida closes it Sunday night. Bring a picnic blanket, show up around 9pm, and let the world come to you.

📍 Where: Parterre du Quartier des Spectacles, angle Jeanne-Mance et de Maisonneuve
🗓️ When: July 14 to 19, shows nightly from around 9:30pm. Free.

🪗 Skáld at Théâtre Fairmount, July 14

If your date nights lean toward the unusual, French neofolk group Skáld plays the intimate Théâtre Fairmount on Tuesday. Think ancient Norse poetry, tagelharpa strings, frame drums and voices that sound carved from a Viking longhouse. Genuinely unlike anything else this summer, and the Fairmount’s scale means you’ll feel every resonance. Tickets from $83.

📍 Where: Théâtre Fairmount, 5240 avenue du Parc, Plateau-Mont-Royal
🗓️ When: July 14, 8pm

🎭 The Nasty Show at Club Soda, July 15 to 19

Just For Laughs kicks off this Wednesday with 250 shows running across the city. For couples who like their humour on the sharp side, the Nasty Show at Club Soda is the week’s defining event: hosted by comedian CP, with guests including Ian Fidance, Marito Lopez, Maddy Smith and Rebecca Reeds. It runs nightly through Sunday at 9:30pm and fully earns its name. Not one for early mornings.

📍 Where: Club Soda, 1225 boulevard Saint-Laurent, Quartier Latin
🗓️ When: July 15 to 19, 9:30pm. Tickets required.

🎸 Bloc Party at Théâtre Beanfield, July 16

Indie rock institution Bloc Party plays Théâtre Beanfield in Little Burgundy on Thursday evening. “Helicopter,” “Banquet,” “This Modern Love” and twenty years of anthems that still sound urgent. The Beanfield is a mid-size venue that gets the acoustics right, and pre-show dinner in the neighbourhood gives you time to debate the best album (it’s Silent Alarm, and you’re both wrong if you disagree).

📍 Where: Théâtre Beanfield, 2490 rue Notre-Dame Ouest, Little Burgundy
🗓️ When: July 16, 8pm (doors 7pm)

🎤 Louis Tomlinson at Bell Centre, July 16

Also Thursday: ex-One Direction member Louis Tomlinson brings his “How Did We Get Here?” world tour to the Bell Centre, with indie-pop duo The Aces in support. His solo catalogue has won over even the reluctant, and the Bell Centre crowd energy for a show like this is unbeatable. Doors at 6pm.

📍 Where: Bell Centre, 1909 avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, downtown
🗓️ When: July 16, doors 6pm, show 7pm

🤘 Billy Talent and Alexisonfire at Bell Centre, July 17

Friday brings a Canadian rock double bill that’s essentially a nostalgia time machine: Billy Talent and Alexisonfire sharing the Bell Centre stage. Two beloved post-hardcore acts, one extremely loud and cathartic evening. If you both have a soft spot for early-2000s Canadian alternative, this is the date night.

📍 Where: Bell Centre, 1909 avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, downtown
🗓️ When: July 17
