Mid-September in Montreal hits different. The humidity is gone, the evenings are cool enough for a jacket, and the city keeps putting on shows. Here’s the pick of what’s worth doing together over the next few weeks.
💃 Festival Quartiers Danses: Contemporary Dance Takes Over the City (Sept 9–19)
Running right now through the 19th, the Festival Quartiers Danses brings contemporary dance into some of the most unexpected corners of the city: boulevard medians, outdoor plazas, public markets, museum courtyards. The 24th edition has 30+ choreographers from Quebec and around the world, an Asia Focus featuring work from Japan and Hong Kong, and a free outdoor programming stream that makes it easy to stumble into something genuinely surprising on a weeknight stroll. You don’t need to know anything about contemporary dance to enjoy it. Half the appeal is the location. Some ticketed indoor shows round out the program at Place des Arts if you want something more formal.
📍 Where: Various locations across Quartier des Spectacles and the city. Base camp is Place des Arts, Montreal.
🗓️ When: September 9 through 19. Many outdoor events are free. Full schedule and venue map at quartiersdanses.com.
🪄 Harry Potter DroneArt Show: 1,200 Drones Over the Old Port (Sept 18–19)
This is the big one. On September 18 and 19, Jacques-Cartier Pier hosts the DroneArt Show: Harry Potter, where 1,200 illuminated drones perform an aerial choreography set to the full film score, with live electric violin accompaniment from the pier stage. Every attendee gets an LED wristband that syncs with the show, so the crowd becomes part of the spectacle. There’s a pre-show atmosphere with food, drinks, and merch starting two hours before the 7:45 p.m. performance. The show runs about 60 minutes with an intermission. This is unambiguously a “we will talk about this afterward” kind of date — not a quiet one, but a spectacle done well. Get tickets in advance; this will sell out.
📍 Where: Quai Jacques-Cartier (Jacques-Cartier Pier), Old Port of Montréal. Metro Champ-de-Mars (Orange line), 10-minute walk.
🗓️ When: Friday September 18 and Saturday September 19 at 7:45 p.m. (doors open at 5:45 p.m.). Tickets at thedroneartshow.com or feverup.com.
🕺 TEMPÉO: Free Outdoor Dance Festival at Place des Arts (Sept 16–20)
Place des Arts Esplanade turns into an open-air dance floor for five nights in a row, each night with a different musical universe: reggaeton (Wed), Afro-house (Thu), cumbia (Fri), K-pop (Sat), and kompa on Sunday. Kompa’s 70th birthday, no less. Artists include Isabella Lovestory, Moonshine, and Boogát. Each evening opens with a free dance workshop, followed by live performance and then a DJ set until 10 p.m. Hosted by Philippe Fehmiu, completely free, and the Esplanade energy when it’s full is a good time regardless of whether you’ve ever salsa danced before. Good date for any night the 16th through the 20th: grab drinks from the festival bar and stay through the DJ set.
📍 Where: Place des Arts Esplanade, 260 boulevard de Maisonneuve Ouest, downtown Montreal. Metro Place-des-Arts (Orange or Green line).
🗓️ When: Wednesday September 16 through Sunday September 20, 6 to 10 p.m. Free admission. Full program at placedesarts.com.
🎵 POP Montreal: 25 Years, 177 Artists, Every Venue in the City (Sept 23–27)
Mark September 23 to 27 now. POP Montreal turns 25 this year and the lineup reflects it: 177 artists across 50+ venues including Sister Nancy, Julie Doiron, ESPRIT 空想, Uffie, Chad VanGaalen, and Basia Bulat, plus film screenings, an art fair, panel talks, and a craft market. The multi-venue format is perfect for couples who like to build a custom night: pick two or three shows in the same neighbourhood, walk between them, find a late dinner somewhere in between. Passes are available but plenty of shows are single-ticket, so you can cherry-pick. Venue list spans from Mile-End basements to proper concert halls. One of the best annual excuses to stay in and explore the city at the same time.
📍 Where: 50+ venues across Montreal, concentrated in Plateau-Mont-Royal, Mile-End, and downtown. Main hub at Casa del Popolo and related venues.
🗓️ When: September 23 through 27. Tickets and passes at popmontreal.com.
