Montreal in October is a city that knows what it is doing. Between now and Thanksgiving, there is a run of shows hitting the Bell Centre, Place Bell, and Place des Arts that would be the highlight of any music city’s calendar. Add the Festival du nouveau cinéma on top of that and you have, genuinely, the best single week for date nights this whole fall. Here is what is happening and why it matters.
🦍 Gorillaz with Little Simz and Deltron 3030 at the Bell Centre (Oct 3)
If you have tickets, you already know. If you don’t, the secondary market still has options for tomorrow night. Gorillaz on a full production tour is a visual spectacle as much as a concert, and the supporting lineup (Little Simz and Deltron 3030) is its own headline in miniature. Worth checking StubHub tonight if you’re on the fence.
📍 Where: Bell Centre, 1909 avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, downtown. Metro Lucien-L’Allier or Bonaventure (Orange line).
🗓️ When: Saturday, October 3. Tickets at evenko.ca or the secondary market.
🎤 Steve Lacy “Oh Yeah Tour” at Place Bell (Oct 6)
The “Oh Yeah Tour” is built around an album that pushed Lacy into a different tier. He writes, produces and plays almost everything himself, and the live show leans into the guitar in a way that makes the R&B arrangements feel live rather than performed-at-you. Place Bell in Laval runs smaller and tighter than the Bell Centre, which suits this kind of music better. A Tuesday night show with good transit options from Montmorency metro makes it easy to pair with dinner in Laval or on the way back into the city.
📍 Where: Place Bell, 1950 rue Claude-Gagné, Laval. About 25 minutes from downtown by car; bus from Montmorency metro (Orange line).
🗓️ When: Tuesday, October 6. Tickets at ticketmaster.ca.
🎵 Metric, Broken Social Scene and Stars: All The Feelings Tour at Place Bell (Oct 7)
Three of the most important Canadian indie bands of the last twenty years, one bill, one night in Laval. “All The Feelings Tour” is the right name for it. Metric headlining, but Broken Social Scene and Stars are not opening acts in the diminished sense of that word. If you have any attachment to any of these three, or to Canadian indie music in general, this requires no further argument. For couples where one person knows all the words and the other is about to, it works especially well. Tickets are still available; do not wait.
📍 Where: Place Bell, 1950 rue Claude-Gagné, Laval. Bus from Montmorency metro (Orange line), about 25 minutes from downtown by car.
🗓️ When: Wednesday, October 7. Tickets at livenation.com.
🎬 Festival du nouveau cinéma, 55th Edition (Oct 8-19)
FNC is the film festival that bets on genuinely risky work rather than safe prestige fare, and over 200 features and shorts from around the world across 10 days means there is always something worth seeing. The main venues (Cinémathèque québécoise and Cinema du Parc) are small enough that you are actually watching a film together rather than sitting in an arena. Weeknight screenings are easy to plan around, tickets are inexpensive, and you will almost certainly see something that is not streaming anywhere and won’t be for months. A good call for any night this week that doesn’t already have a concert in it.
📍 Where: Multiple venues, primarily Cinémathèque québécoise (335 boul. de Maisonneuve Est, Metro Berri-UQAM) and Cinema du Parc (3575 ave du Parc, near Metro Mont-Royal, Orange line).
🗓️ When: October 8 to 19. Full program and tickets at nouveaucinema.ca.
🥁 The Smashing Pumpkins “Rats in a Cage Tour” at the Bell Centre (Oct 9)
The Rats in a Cage Tour has gotten strong reviews for its production and for set lists that go deeper than the obvious hits. If you have any attachment to the Mellon Collie era or Siamese Dream, this is worth going for. The arena format fits Corgan’s ambitions better than it might seem. Friday night before Thanksgiving weekend: dinner downtown, then the Bell Centre.
📍 Where: Bell Centre, 1909 avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, downtown. Metro Lucien-L’Allier or Bonaventure (Orange line).
🗓️ When: Friday, October 9. Tickets at evenko.ca.
🎻 Edward Scissorhands in Concert at Place des Arts (Oct 10-11)
A live orchestra performs Danny Elfman’s score for Edward Scissorhands alongside a full screening of the film. Elfman’s music for this movie works completely without the images; hearing it live with them makes it something else. Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier seats beautifully, and this is the kind of experience that lands better in person than it sounds on paper. Saturday (Oct 10) and Sunday (Oct 11) both work; Sunday is Thanksgiving, which makes the matinee option a natural fit between family commitments. Check placedesarts.com for the showtimes and seating chart.
📍 Where: Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts, 175 rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, downtown. Metro Place-des-Arts (Green line).
🗓️ When: Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11. Tickets at placedesarts.com.
