The transition from September to October in Montreal comes with a genuinely strong lineup. Three major Bell Centre shows land in the next two weeks, the 55th Festival du nouveau cinéma opens with world-class cinema from over 30 countries, and the Botanical Garden’s Gardens of Light is running through the month. Whether your version of a date night is singing along to something huge or sitting quietly in a dark cinema watching a film nobody else in your city has seen yet, the next couple of weeks have you covered.
🎸 Gorillaz with Little Simz and Deltron 3030 at Bell Centre (Oct 3)
Gorillaz is one of those rare arena acts that still feels like a genuine artistic project rather than a nostalgia tour. The virtual band’s shows are full production events built around animation, multiple live performers, and a setlist that runs deep into the catalog beyond the obvious hits. Little Simz and Deltron 3030 open, which means the whole evening is properly stacked. Saturday night, 7 p.m.
📍 Where: Bell Centre, 1909 avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, downtown Montreal. Metro Lucien-L’Allier or Bonaventure (Orange line).
🗓️ When: Saturday, October 3, 7:00 p.m. Tickets at evenko.ca.
🎤 Teddy Swims at Bell Centre (Oct 7)
Teddy Swims makes the kind of soul and R&B music that works well as a date. His voice is enormous, his delivery is raw and honest, and the crowd at his shows tends to be in a genuinely good mood. This is his first Bell Centre headline, a significant step for an artist who has spent the past couple of years turning into one of the more compelling voices in mainstream R&B. Wednesday night, 7 p.m.
📍 Where: Bell Centre, 1909 avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, downtown Montreal. Metro Lucien-L’Allier or Bonaventure (Orange line).
🗓️ When: Wednesday, October 7, 7:00 p.m. Tickets at evenko.ca.
🎬 Festival du nouveau cinéma, 55th Edition (Oct 8–18)
The FNC is one of the best events in Montreal’s cultural fall calendar and one of the most underused date options in the city. Nearly 200 films from over 30 countries screen across Monument-National, Cinéplex Odéon Quartier Latin, Concordia University, the Cinémathèque québécoise, and a few other venues. This year’s opening film is Denis Côté’s “Nobody’s Violence” and the lineup includes Pedro Almodóvar’s “Autofiction,” Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine,” and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Look Back.” The FNC has a particular gift for programming films that are surprising rather than safe, which makes it better for a date than most mainstream cinema options.
📍 Where: Multiple venues across downtown Montreal, including Monument-National, Cinéplex Odéon Quartier Latin, and Cinémathèque québécoise. Full schedule at nouveaucinema.ca.
🗓️ When: October 8 to 18. Individual tickets and passes at nouveaucinema.ca.
🎸 The Smashing Pumpkins “The Rats in a Cage Tour” at Bell Centre (Oct 9)
Three nights into the FNC (and one after Teddy Swims), the Smashing Pumpkins bring their Rats in a Cage Tour to the Bell Centre. If you and your date have never actually seen them live, this is the show to fix that. Billy Corgan’s live sound is considerably heavier and more dense than the records, the band plays long, and the setlists tend to pull from across the catalog. Friday night.
📍 Where: Bell Centre, 1909 avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, downtown Montreal. Metro Lucien-L’Allier or Bonaventure (Orange line).
🗓️ When: Friday, October 9, 7:00 p.m. Tickets at evenko.ca.
🎻 Edward Scissorhands in Concert at Place des Arts (Oct 10–11)
This one is the most atmospheric date on the list. The 1990 Tim Burton film plays on screen at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier while a live orchestra performs Danny Elfman’s score in real time. It’s the kind of experience that makes you hear the music differently than you would on a record, and the film holds up completely. Elfman’s score is both strange and deeply romantic, and watching it performed live in a concert hall is exactly the kind of shared experience that makes for a genuinely memorable night. Two performances: Saturday October 10 and Sunday October 11.
📍 Where: Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts, 175 rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, downtown. Metro Place-des-Arts (Green line).
🗓️ When: October 10 and 11. Tickets at placedesarts.com.
🌿 Gardens of Light at the Botanical Garden (Through October)
If concerts aren’t the mood, the Jardin botanique’s annual lantern installation runs through October and remains one of the best no-reservation date options in the city. The garden’s pathways are transformed after dusk with hundreds of Chinese lanterns, illuminated sculptures, and living plant installations that look genuinely different from everything else in Montreal. Entry includes both the lantern installation and access to the greenhouses, which stay open until 9 p.m. No need to book in advance, though weekends during peak October get busy.
📍 Where: Jardin botanique de Montréal, 4101 rue Sherbrooke Est, Rosemont. Metro Pie-IX (Green line).
🗓️ When: Open nightly through October. Greenhouses until 9 p.m. Tickets at espacepourlavie.ca.
