The first half of October is already covered (Gorillaz, Smashing Pumpkins, Edward Scissorhands in Concert, the FNC, and that’s a strong opening). But the second half of the month is genuinely stacked too, and it starts tonight with a free outdoor festival that most people have not yet heard about. From projection mapping in Mile End to prix-fixe restaurant nights across the whole city, here is what to book now.
💡 MAPP_MTL Digital Block Party at Van Horne Skatepark (Oct 1-4)
MAPP_MTL is the city’s international projection mapping festival, and its centrepiece this year is a free three-day block party at the Van Horne Skatepark in the Mile End, running Thursday through Saturday (Oct 1-3) from 5 to 10 p.m., then a family-focused Tagtool Jam on Sunday (Oct 4) at Caserne 26 from 2 to 6 p.m. The Digital Block Party has free admission with reservation: animated projections cover nearby buildings, there are DJ sets, food vendors, and hands-on creative workshops if you want to do something other than watch. Projection mapping festivals tend to draw a crowd that skews more toward design and architecture nerds than general festival-goers, which usually means shorter lines and a better vibe. Free, outdoors, walkable, and happening right now.
📍 Where: Van Horne Skatepark, Mile End (near Saint-Laurent metro, Ligne Orange).
🗓️ When: October 1-3, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Free with reservation at mappmt.com. Oct 4 Tagtool Jam at Caserne 26, 2-6 p.m., free.
🎵 The Secret Chord: A Leonard Cohen Experience at the Segal Centre (Oct 5-25)
Leonard Cohen is one of those artists who sits differently in Montreal than anywhere else in the world. He’s from here, he’s buried here, and there’s still a Plateau mural of him that draws visitors from everywhere. The Secret Chord is a tribute concert rather than a biographical show: a full band and several vocalists perform the catalog in a theatre setting, with production designed to feel like a real concert rather than a museum piece. Three weeks of weekend performances at the Segal Centre means you have options. For a date night, the combination of the music, the setting, and the particular Montreal weight of the material makes this a legitimately good one.
📍 Where: Segal Centre for Performing Arts, 5170 Côte-Sainte-Catherine, Côte-des-Neiges. Bus 51 or 129 from downtown.
🗓️ When: October 5 to 25. Thursday through Sunday performances. Tickets at segalcentre.org.
🎭 Mamma Mia! at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier (Oct 13-18)
If your date nights tend to involve singing along in your seat and you have not yet seen Mamma Mia! live, this is your window. The production runs one week at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier and it is the kind of show where enthusiasm is the point. ABBA songs in a full musical theatre production with choreography and a live orchestra hit differently than the film. It is also genuinely a good time if you have seen it before. Thanksgiving week means a lot of people are out of town for the long weekend before it opens (Oct 10-12), so the first few performances may be easier to get into.
📍 Where: Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts, 175 rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, downtown. Metro Place-des-Arts (Ligne Verte).
🗓️ When: October 13 to 18. Tickets at placedesarts.com.
🎤 Olivia Rodrigo: The Unraveled Tour at Bell Centre (Oct 21-22)
Two nights at the Bell Centre on the Unraveled Tour. Rodrigo is one of the most interesting live performers in mainstream pop right now, largely because she leans into the guitar and the band rather than the production, and her audience tends to be both enthusiastic and unusually engaged with the actual songwriting. If you or your date have been waiting for the right moment to see her live, this is the best version of that. Two nights means tickets are somewhat easier to come by than a single-night show.
📍 Where: Bell Centre, 1909 avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, downtown. Metro Lucien-L’Allier or Bonaventure (Ligne Orange).
🗓️ When: October 21 and 22. Tickets at evenko.ca.
🍽️ MTLàTABLE at Restaurants Across the City (Oct 29-Nov 15)
MTLàTABLE is Montreal’s fall food festival, and it works simply: participating restaurants offer special prix-fixe menus at prices well below what you’d pay on a regular night. It’s the 14th edition and reservations are already open at mtlatable.mtl.org. The festival covers mid-range and high-end restaurants across the whole city, which means you can book something you’d normally consider a splurge and come out ahead on the bill. Good for a birthday dinner, a catch-up with someone you haven’t seen in a while, or just a proper sit-down date when the weather has definitively turned.
📍 Where: Restaurants across all of Montreal. Full list and reservations at mtlatable.mtl.org.
🗓️ When: October 29 to November 15. Book early, especially for weekend slots; popular spots fill up fast.
