School is back, which means weekends just got a lot more important. The good news: September around Montreal is genuinely excellent for families, and the calendar just filled up in the best way. Here’s what to prioritize.

🏮 Gardens of Light: The Botanical Garden Goes Magical After Dark (Sept 3–Nov 1)

The 14th edition of the Jardins de Lumière (Gardens of Light) just opened at the Montreal Botanical Garden, and it’s one of those events where you take one look at the photos and immediately start texting someone to go with you. Three garden spaces transform after sunset: the Indigenous Peoples Garden presents an all-new immersive circuit called Resonance, celebrating the garden’s 25th anniversary with illuminated scenes, voice installations, and light patterns that tell intergenerational stories; the Japanese Garden channels the “yūgen” aesthetic with monumental projections through the pine grove; and the Chinese Garden closes out the loop with hundreds of silk lanterns reflected across Dream Lake, inspired by the mythological Shan Hai Jing. The whole circuit runs about 2 km. Kids lose their minds for it. The evening lighting is dramatic enough to be genuinely stunning for adults too. Weekends sell out, so book timed entry ahead.

🎉 Fête de la famille de Laval: Free All-Day Family Day (Sunday, Sept 6)

If you’re not in a rush to get back to the city after Labour Day weekend, the City of Laval is throwing a free family day at Centre de la Nature this Sunday. The full lineup includes inflatable games, a zip line and aerial course, arts and science workshops, live shows, and strolling performers. It’s designed specifically for kids 4 to 14, but the format works for all ages. Centre de la Nature itself is a beautiful 50-hectare green space in the heart of Laval, with easy parking, which is a nice bonus when you’re hauling a family around on a long weekend. About 30 minutes from downtown Montreal by car.

🍎 Apple Season Is Open Around Montreal

September is peak apple picking in Quebec, and the orchards within an hour to 90 minutes of Montreal are worth the drive. Quinn Farm in Franklin (about 50 minutes south) is a reliable family favourite, with picking plus hay wagon rides, a farm playground, an animal barn, and a shop for cider and apple products. Verger Charbonneau on the South Shore goes further, with a crêperie, donut shop, and a cider house, so it’s easy to turn into a full half-day. Further afield (about 90 minutes), Petch Orchards near Farnham adds a petting zoo and an 8-acre corn maze for older kids. The season runs through October, so no rush, but September is when the variety selection is best.

🚴 Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal: Free UCI WorldTour Racing (Sept 13)

Put September 13 in the calendar. The Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal is a UCI WorldTour one-day race on the same Mont-Royal circuit the World Championships will use two weeks later. The world’s best pro cyclists race multiple laps over the mountain, and the Camillien-Houde climb is where it gets genuinely exciting: riders are slow enough that you can see their faces, hear them breathe, and feel the effort up close in a way that’s electric for kids. The race also includes a free Fans’ Village near the start/finish with cycling exhibits, giant screens, food, and family activities. No tickets needed for any of it.

📍 Where: Mont-Royal circuit; best free spectator spot is on Chemin Camillien-Houde. Metro to Mont-Royal (Orange line), then bus 11 or a walk up the mountain. Fans’ Village near the Avenue du Parc finish area.
